40% Of Boiler Breakdowns Happen When The Heating Goes Back On, And What Decides If An Engineer Comes Today

Radiator valve turned up to 3 beside a boiler showing a red fault code

A boiler that ran fine in April has been doing nothing but hot water for 5 months. The morning it gets asked for the radiators again is the morning the fault shows, and British Gas put a number on that in September with its Great Big Boiler Test, using its own 2025 breakdown records and a survey of 2,000 adults.

This is what the release carried:

  • 40% of boiler breakdowns happen when the heating is switched back on after summer.
  • 59% of people only think about the boiler when it misbehaves.
  • 22% have had a breakdown after putting off or skipping a service.
  • 33% say putting household maintenance off, of any kind, has cost them more money in the end.
  • 19% believe a boiler only ever fails on the coldest day of the year.

Hmm, so the boiler is not picking its moment at all. The switch on is what finds the fault, on British Gas’s count, and the queue is everyone else who waited as well.

What The Before 11am Promise Says On British Gas’s Own Page

If you go to the same day appointment page on British Gas the line reads “Tell us before 11am and we’ll send an engineer the very same day”, and you do not have to be a British Gas customer to ring it. Underneath that line the page gives its own figure. 80% of people who called by 11am got a same day visit in 2025, which means 1 in 5 did not, and the page does not say what those 20% were offered instead. The boiler repair page on the same site carries a newer one, 83% for September 2025 to August 2026, so the number has moved up a little. Same day on both pages means the visit, with first visit completion counted separately, and the landing page gives no arrival window, so the window is what to ask for when booking.

Sheena Anker, one of their engineers, said in the release that the first really cold day of the year is often when people find out there is a problem. That is also the sort of day British Gas’s own cover terms say can affect its response times, because of weather and demand. The same terms split a call into priority, which is no heating or hot water, and emergency, which is a medical risk or a leak that cannot be contained, so it pays to say on the phone which of those it is and whether anyone in the house is vulnerable before the slot gets picked. A smell of gas or a carbon monoxide alarm going off is a different call altogether, 0800 111 999 and out of the house, not a repair booking.

What A One Off Repair Costs Without Cover This October

Checkatrade updated its boiler repair cost guide this month. The figures in it:

  • A repair including parts runs from £120 to £750, with £300 as the average.
  • A gas engineer’s hourly rate sits between £50 and £80, £65 on average, before parts.
  • An emergency repair, which Checkatrade ties to unsociable hours, runs from £225 to £675, with £450 as the average, and parts are usually charged on top of that.
  • Every figure in the guide is plus VAT.

Finding the fault in September, when the heating is not needed yet, buys the time to book an ordinary repair at the ordinary rate, and whether that comes out cheaper depends on the fault and on what the firm charges for the call out and the parts, so the quote is where to ask. British Gas’s test was 15 minutes with the heating on, and that is all it asked for.

What The Firm Is Running When It Says The Engineer Is On The Way

The text that says the engineer is on the way comes out of a dispatch system, and a firm offering same day booking will usually be running one of these, whichever make it is. We read through what the HVAC field service management software page at Fieldy lists, as one make, and it is this: jobs matched to engineers by proximity and availability, live GPS tracking of the vans, automatic alerts to update customers, estimates and invoices done on site, and a maintenance contract record with renewal reminders. The plan page adds inventory tracking, parts tracked across more than one location, and low stock alerts. No price is on the page, the trial is 14 days with no card, there is no setup fee, and the phone numbers on it are American and Indian.

What that list means for the person at home is plain enough. The nearest free engineer with the right ticket is what the matching does, and the text with the name and the time on it is the customer alert, which a firm can switch on or leave off. A dispatch system does not carry stock, it only knows what the stock is. If the van has not got the fan or the valve, a second visit gets booked, and a second visit means waiting longer, while whether it means paying more depends on the quote, because British Gas’s one off repair is a fixed £295 with parts and labour in and the price does not move if the engineer has to come back, and an hourly firm will charge for the second visit unless it says otherwise, so return visits are what to ask about before the first one.

How To Check The Card At The Door

HSE’s own page gives the quickest check. The engineer’s ID card carries a 7 digit licence number, and texting the word Gas followed by that number to 85080 brings back a reply saying whether the number is registered, or the freefone line on 0800 408 5500 does the same with a person on the end of it. The card itself wants a look as well, the photo on the front, the expiry date, the business name, and the back, which lists the gas work the engineer is qualified for, because a registered number and a boiler qualification are 2 different things.

The other check is the service record rather than the sticker on the case, because the sticker only gives a date and the Benchmark logbook that came with the boiler gives what was done, which is also what the maker asks to see when a guarantee claim comes up.
