Men’s magazines have had a brutal couple of decades. Loaded went, FHM went, Arena went, and most of what survived moved online and thinned out. British GQ is still here, still printing, still landing on doormats, and the reason is that it never really was a lads’ mag in the first place. It was always the grown up one.

An issue today is roughly one third style and two thirds everything else. The fashion pages are the anchor, obviously: what to actually wear this season, watches, trainers, tailoring, and grooming advice that assumes you have a normal budget as well as showing you the mad stuff. But the interviews and long features are what people quote. GQ gets access other titles don’t, footballers, actors, musicians, the odd politician, and the writing is a cut above.

Worth knowing before you order: British GQ moved from monthly to publishing several times a year, so the issues are now thicker and closer to collectors’ items than throwaway monthlies. Fewer, better, heavier is the current shape of it.
